Neighbor’s Cell Phone And Wallet Stolen On Late Night D October 6
R Train, 25th Street Subway Station

After reading the news on Sunday of the October 15 cell phone robbery that took place near the 25th Street R train stop, a neighbor contacted us regarding a similar theft that occurred on Sunday, October 6, when his wallet and phone were both taken somewhere between 4th Avenue/9th Street and the 36th Street subway stop.

“It was on the D train, running local because it was late. Probably 2am,” he explained via email. “Didn’t realize my phone was missing until the 36th Street stop. I dozed off for a few stops and it must have been swiped then.

“I looked at my statement,” he continued, “and money was taken from an ATM on 36th. Didn’t have a strong pin unfortunately. I went to the ATMs and the owners didn’t have cameras installed at the bodegas.”

Hopefully these are isolated incidents, but it’s best to play it safe and keep your phones and other electronic devices secure when you’re on the subway. If you do find yourself the victim of a theft, be sure to file a report with the NYPD (72nd Precinct if you’re south of 15th Street and 78th Precinct if you’re north of 15th Street). The reports can help police recognize robbery patterns in the area and give them an idea of where extra patrols might be needed.

Anyone with information on the above mentioned cell phone thefts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting your tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577. The NYPD says all calls are confidential.
