Neighbors Building a Bike-Friendly Flatbush

Ditmas Rides, founded by Rene Netter, has been hosting weekly bike rides around the neighborhood for months. Rene recently teamed up with Julie May to start the Flatbush Bicycle Coalition. The group has worked with local businesses to sign them up for Transportation Alternatives’ Bicycle Friendly Business program, reports Streetsblog. There are now 14 participating businesses on Cortelyou Road.

The coalition has grander plans, says Streetsblog, including two bike corrals on Cortelyou Road and creating more bike lanes in the neighborhood on Argyle, Dorchester and Westminster Roads.

In the future, Netter said, he’d like to have visioning sessions, “so we can get people to start thinking about what could be.”
“It’s an opportunity to make everyone’s voices heard,” May said. “The more cyclists represented, the better.”

What do you think of more bike lanes and corrals in the neighborhood?

In related news, this week’s Community Board 14 Transportation meeting has been cancelled. We’ll keep you up to date on when it is rescheduled.
