Neighbor Brings Interactive Yoga Theater To 2013 Dream Up Festival
Ditmas Park local and Third Root yoga instructor Amanda Miller is currently performing One Breath, Then Another: An Interactive Yoga Show as part of the Dream Up Festival from Theater for the New City. The festival includes 24 “hand-picked” productions from up-and-coming playwrights, including Amanda, whose show is described:
The show chronicles Amanda’s month-long experience studying yoga on an ashram in India. It depicts her quest for healing and empowerment to avoid destroying herself like her father. Practices in her training conjure memories of her father’s lung cancer and death, in addition to her own struggles with mental health.
As she trains to become a yoga teacher, she reflects deeply on mortality and the workings of her mind, learning to let go and surrender to the present moment, inviting the audience to do the same.
Amanda plays multiple roles in the production (which is loosely based on a memoir), including her father and the leader of her ashram. She engages the audience with breathing exercises, chanting, simple yoga poses, and meditation. Remaining performances of the show are tonight at 6:30pm, and Sunday, September 1 at 2pm. All shows take place at 155 1st Avenue, between E 9th and E 10th Streets in Manhattan. You can buy tickets online or by calling 212-868-4444.
