Murrow High Chess Team Wins State Championship, On To National Title

Edward R. Murrow High School’s chess team won their 19th state championship Sunday in a dramatic come-from-behind victory that sets them up for another shot at the national title, the Daily News reports.

The team faced several setbacks during the state tournament in Saratoga — particularly back-to-back losses by their star player Brian Arthur. However, Arthur capitalized on an opponent’s mistake in the final game and clinched the victory for Murrow by half a point, according to the Daily News.

The team will head to Atlanta to try and reclaim the national trophy, which they last won in 2013. Murrow has also won national titles in 1992, 1993, 1994, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. A book has been written about the high school’s distinguished chess team and alumni have even gone on to medal in Olympic chess competitions.
