MTA Train Operator In Custody After Man Jumps In Front Of R Train
A train operator fatally struck a man who jumped in front of a northbound R train inside a Brooklyn subway station, then fled the scene as police questioned him Monday morning, an NYPD spokesperson said.
The unidentified victim plunged in front of the train in Bay Ridge’s 77th Street-4th Avenue station around 9:55 a.m., an MTA spokesperson confirmed. Police said emergency responders pronounced the victim — whose age ranged from 40 to 50 — dead on the scene.
Police said the suspect was “uncooperative” as they began to question him after the incident. The suspect thenran away from cops through several train cars, then onto the tracks and up the stairs, sources told The New York Post.
Officers arrested the motorman a block away from 78th Street with help from transit supervisors who phoned the train operator, and alerted cops of his location, sources said. Police stated that they took the suspect into custody and no charges have been made. The investigation is still ongoing.
The MTA suspended services between 36th Street and 95 Street, while police investigated the scene. Bus alternatives were available as subway services resumed an hour later, the MTA said.
