Following Council Member Brad Lander’s call for the MTA to “inform the surrounding community about the construction plan going forward and meet that timeline” regarding the lengthy, ongoing construction at the 4th Avenue-9th Street subway station, the MTA has provided us with a response about the work:

The original contractor walked off the project. Following an extensive exchange with the surety for completion of this project under the performance bond, work recommenced in the Fall of 2013. The first stage of work called for an assessment of all remaining work, and for the surety to evaluate claims by the existing contractors for extra funds, and then make new contractual arrangements with the existing sub-contractors. In addition, the surety was compelled to bring in some new sub-contractors. This effort took longer than expected but the work is now ongoing.
Some component repairs at the 4 Ave/9th St subway station include repairs to platforms and aluminum panels, new lighting, new canopies, new PACIS system, masonry work at street level, new roof installation. As of May, most of the interior station renovations have been completed. Exterior renovations such as the masonry work, and roof installation are underway.
Much of the work at 4th/9th Ave Station is specialty metal work along with finishing the tower brick work. The work is progressing and their projected completion is the 4th quarter of 2014.
NYCT staff is monitoring the progress of the work and if necessary will pursue other approaches should the work fall behind again.

Not mentioned there but what you should be looking out for starting next week: On September 1, the northbound R train entrance on the northeast corner will be closed for three months, to replace the rundown staircase there, and once that work is completed, they’ll do the same to the the southbound R train entrance across the street.
