MTA Plans Two Fare Hikes In Next Four Years

MTA Plans Two Fare Hikes In Next Four Years

Coming off of a fare increase in March of this year, it’s may be a little tough to hear that the MTA is planning on increasing fares and tolls twice more over the next four years. At a hearing yesterday, officials announced plans that could increase the price of a ride by about 15% by 2017, reports the Daily News:

Chief Financial Officer Robert Foran said rising pension, health care, debt payments and other costs necessitate hitting up mass transit riders — and drivers using MTA bridges and tunnels — for another $424 million in 2015, and $520 million in 2017.

The MTA pledged that there won’t be any budget-driven cuts to service, however, and also revealed plans this week for a restoration or increase of service to some subway and bus lines.

There are no specifics yet about the exact amounts that fares and tolls might increase, and just like the last round, the proposal will go through a public hearing process before the MTA adopts it.

So, are you ready and willing to pay more?
