About Fort Greene

Named after a 1776 fort from the American Revolutionary War, Fort Greene is a historic neighborhood north of Prospect Park and directly across from Lower Manhattan. Fort Green is known for its elegant low-rise housing, tree-lined streets, and mid-19th century Eastlake and Italianate architecture. This is a very clean neighborhood with lots of artsy restaurants and boutiques, which creates a hip scene despite the area’s historic presence.

Why Move to Fort Greene?

The housing stock is impressive here, and Fort Greene has a gorgeous park by the hospital where you can let your dog off-leash before 9am.

The neighborhood is served by several trains of the New York City subway at Atlantic Avenue, DeKalb Avenue, Fulton Street, and Lafayette Avenue. The Long Island Rail Road has a station here, and there are numerous bus routes, as well.

Brooklyn Technical High School is in Fort Greene, which is one of the most competitive schools in New York City. Living here also puts you minutes away from Clinton Hill, where you will find the prestigious Pratt Institute.

Fort Greene Moving Tips

If you are moving into one of the coveted brownstones, be sure to measure doorways, halls, and stairways to make sure your furniture will fit. If parking is not permitted on your street during certain hours, you may need to schedule your move around this time, or find out if you can obtain a special parking permit. FlatRate Moving has conducted hundreds of moves in the area and is a great choice for a stress-free move.

If one of the newer luxury condos has your name on it, make sure you reserve the service elevator, if necessary. Rentals are coveted here, so if you find one available, don’t hesitate to sign the lease on the spot, or someone right behind you will. If you hire movers, make sure you obtain a copy of the company’s Proof of Insurance for your property manager, as it will probably be requested.
