Morning Mug: Stand Still Like The Hummingbird

A treat for readers who fancy themselves ornithologists, or just lovers of nature and animals. I’ll let today’s featured Morning Mug photographer explain in her own words:

I took this photo in August 2009. It was maybe the 2nd year that I was reliably sighting hummingbirds in my yard. I credit the beautiful trumpet vines (Campsis radicans) – and subsequent other hummer-attracting plants I’ve added to my garden – for their visits during the fall migration south (on their way north in spring there’s really not much around here ready for them). They show up almost on schedule in the last 7-10 days of August and hang around until the middle of September.
Nothing can turn a bunch of fairly intelligent 50-somethings into blithering idiots like seeing hummingbirds in Brooklyn! I’d invite everyone over to hummer watch but for all I know Brooklyn is just teeming with closet hummer lovers. My advice is to go to parks and botanic gardens during the fall migration and keep your eyes open. Last year there was a nest in Prospect Park!
