More Illegal Clothing Bins Being Dropped Around The Neighborhood
For-profit clothing donation bins have been an ongoing problem in Ditmas Park and nearby neighborhoods for a while now, and it seems like we’ve gotten a new rash of them over the past several weeks. This bin on Westminster and Foster, like others before it, has turned into something of a dumpster/trash heap, and we’ve also noticed bins placed on E 16th Street near Cortelyou Road (below) as well as one on Hinckley Place near Coney Island Avenue and Coney Island Avenue near Turner Place.
These bins are illegal under the DSNY’s Local Law 31 of 2007. Neighbors are invited to submit a form requesting their removal–and for Viltex USA bins like the one on Westminster, you can also get in touch with company dispatcher Mary at 862-279-5292 or maryviltexusa@gmail.com.
If you have clothing or housewares you’d like to donate, here are some alternative sources:
- Recycle textiles from 8am-2pm Sundays at the Cortelyou Greenmarket (Cortelyou Road between Argyle and Rugby Roads)
- Take linens to Sean Casey Animal Rescue (153 E 3rd Street between Caton Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway, 718-436-5163)
- Post to the Flatbush Family Network
- Schedule a pick-up with Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church (718-529-7825)
- Drop off at Housing Works (266 5th Avenue at Garfield Place in Park Slope, 718-636-2271)
- Drop off at Goodwill (1102 Fulton Street between Franklin and Classon Avenues in Bed Stuy, 718-789-0856)
- Use bins at the former C-Town/now Ideal Supermarket (710 Coney Island Avenue between Avenue C and Cortelyou R0ad)
- If you live in an apartment building, apply for the re-fashioNYC program.
