MetroCard Discounts Could Be Eliminated in 2013
In addition to significant fare hikes starting in March 2013, MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota wants to cut MetroCard discounts in order to earn more money for the agency, says Crain’s New York Business.
Subways and buses currently cost $2.25 but the MTA only recieves an average of $1.63 per trip, said the chairman. Currently, buying MetroCards in bulk for round sums like $10 will earn $.70, a 7% bonus, cutting the cost per ride from $2.25 to $2.10. As part of an attempt to raise $450 million by raising fares and tolls next year, the discount is being considered for the cutting block.
“Do we need a discount that deep?” Lhota asked at the Crain’s forum.
Reduced rate cards for groups such as seniors were also mentioned but it’s not clear exactly which MetroCard discounts will be cut to what extent.
Whether or not this will stop riders from purchasing MetroCards at $10 instead of single rides is a subject of debate. For his part, the chairman thinks convenience will beat frugality and riders will keep buying in bulk.
The MTA will release financial projects in October and then hold public hearings before voting on the fare hikes in December.
Will the discount change the way you do or don’t use subways and buses?
