There are many things that Brooklynites are proud of and known for, whether seriously or jokingly. Among them are our 718 area code, our small businessowners, and our awesome and various hairstyles. One of Myrtle Avenue’s newest businesses, Salon 718, combines all three.

Located at 456 Myrtle Avenue (between Washington and Waverly Avenues), the salon is the third in a chain of Brooklyn hair salons owned by Michaella Williams, a Clinton Hill resident who wanted to “raise my kids and my business in Brooklyn.”

“Our goal is to be the hair in your ‘hood. We’re hoping to be a boutique store,” explained Williams, whose sunny personality fits right in at the sunny glass-fronted shop. “I started in a brownstone on Bergen Street and worked really hard to have a footprint in Brooklyn because I want to keep giving back to my community.”

At the same time, Williams said she wants Salon 718 to be a standout in both the local community and Brooklyn.

“I would like us to be viewed as the Ritz Carlton of the hair industry for Brooklyn,” she smiled. “You really have to make sure you’re doing extraordinary service. I just finished a Goldman Sachs training program, which allowed us to look at growing systems. As a woman businessowner, I like the opportunity to have and grow my team and give them [the best] tools.”

The new Myrtle Avenue location has the same hallmark beads and blow dryers, and black-white-and-wood color scheme as the other two locations in Fort Greene (80 DeKalb Avenue) and Prospect Heights (610 Vanderbilt Avenue), as well as the same “menu” of services.

Salon 718 does everything from cuts, blowouts, perms, and highlights to balayage, Moroccan oil, and makeup artistry. Prices range from $40 for haircuts up to $125 depending on what you get done and the expertise of the stylist. Coloring starts at $75 for a single process and highlights start at $145, all the way up to $300-$500 for the Brazilian keratin treatment. Makeup sessions are by appointment only.

“I think how you look depends on how you feel, so we help people feel good about themselves,” said Williams of her inspiration to be in the hair industry. “You can always count on your hairdresser and makeup artist to make your day special.”
