Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Information
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is observed today, Monday, January 20, is intended to be a day of service and peace. Federal and state offices are closed so people can get out and volunteer.
If you’re still looking for a way to give back, check out MLKDay.org, which serves as, among other things, a curator of volunteer activities happening today. See their site for additional activities, which can be searched by zip code.
As for city services, here’s how things are running today:
• Government offices and courts and the Department of Motor Vehicle offices are closed.
• There is no mail delivery.
• Public schools are closed.
• Alternate side parking regulations are suspended, but all other regulations, including parking meters, remain in effect.
• There is no garbage or recycling collection. If Monday is your regular garbage collection day, put your garbage out after 4pm Monday evening. If Monday is your regular recycling day, wait until next week to put your recycling out.
• Subways, busses, and the Staten Island Ferry are running on a regular weekday schedule.
• All branches of the Public Library systems are closed.
What’s Open?
Our restaurants, coffee shops, and bars are open regular hours on Martin Luther King Jr Day.
Brooklyn Academy of Music (Peter Jay Sharp Building, 30 Lafayette Avenue) will hold a free, first come, first served tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. Doors are already open, and the show starts at 10:30am.
Brooklyn Botanical Garden (150 Eastern Parkway) which is normally closed on Mondays, is open on MLK Day from 10am-4:30pm.
Brooklyn Children’s Museum (145 Brooklyn Avenue) is open today from 10am-5pm and will have a number of activities related to MLK’s message of peace.
In Prospect Park the Lefferts House and the Audubon Center will be open from 12-4pm, and there’s a special conversation about service and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for elementary and middle school kids from 1-3pm.
Prospect Park Zoo (450 Flatbush Avenue) is open from 10am-4:30pm.
