Marking the 11th Anniversary of 9/11

Today marks the 11th anniversary of 9/11. There are number of ways throughout the city to mark the day including one ceremony within the neighborhood.

• At 7:30 a.m., you can take a birding walk in Prospect Park and “and commune with nature on the 11th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.”

• At 8:30 a.m., a ceremony will be held outside the 70th precinct on Lawrence Avenue.

• The Official World Trade Center Site Memorial Ceremony and Remembrance begins at 8:46 a.m. including a reading of the names of victims and a moment of silence.

• MSNBC will be rebroadcasting 9/11/01’s Today Show in the morning. I watched this rebroadcast on Sunday and have watched many recordings of news coverage of the day. It always catches me by surprise how emotional the footage is even over a decade later.

The Museum of the City of New York will screen the 2002 HBO documentary In Memoriam. The film  tells the story of 9/11 with first-hand accounts and is narrated by Rudy Giuliani.

• The Jewish Community Center of Manhattan will screen Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, the silver screen adaptation of Johnathan Safran Foer’s novel about a young boy whose father was killed in the attacks, some of which was filmed in our area.
