Challenging, Stubborn Marine Park Fire Takes Hours To Put Out

MARINE PARK – A five-alarm fire erupted from a sushi restaurant today morning. Thankfully, nobody was seriously hurt.

At about 6:15 a.m., the FDNY got an alarm for a fire inside the E Sushi restaurant at 2118 Flatbush Avenue. Assistant Chief Richard Howe said the “challenging” and “stubborn” fire, began at the cockloft, the area below the roof and above the top ceiling. About 45 units and 200 firefighters were called on scene to help extinguish the flames.

When firefighters got to the location, the fire was already advanced. Howe said aggressive attempts were used to help clear the flames.

The fire was so intense that after a period of time, a decision was made for firefighters to switch from interior tactics to exterior tactics for their safety.

“If we’re not being successful, we become the people that are in danger,” Howe said.

After roughly four hours, around 10:30 a.m., the fire was finally under control.

Three firefighters were left with minor injuries, but nothing life-threatening. The restaurant and two shops nearby were saved and can both be re-occupied soon, Howe said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
