An FDNY fire prevention inspector was arrested yesterday for bribing who he thought was a Department of Buildings (DOB) inspector with $300 in a greeting card to get rid of a stop work order on his Marine Park home, according to the Department of Investigation.

Angelo Young, 47, first got onto the DOI radar on August 30 when he brandished his FDNY badge to the DOB after getting violations for doing unpermitted work on his home, officials said.

After the DOI was alerted, they sent an undercover agent to pose as a DOB agent to tell Young that the violation wasn’t processed yet. The two met near Young’s office at 65 Street and W 6 Street, and Young told the investigator that he “squashes summonses,” and “requested courtesy” as a fellow inspector, according to DOI investigators.

About three weeks later, the two met again and Young promised the investigator $300 for making the violation disappear. On September 26, Young and a friend of his were in his car with the investigator and handed him a get-well-soon card with three $100 bills, according to the DOI.

“Flashing a FDNY shield; offering cash to avoid a building violation — these are acts that will result in only one thing: criminal charges,” said DOI Commissioner Mark Peters in a statement. “There is no tolerance for anyone circumventing New York City’s construction rules, thereby diminishing everyone’s safety.”

Young is charged with three counts of bribery in the third degree, a class D felony that, if convicted, amounts to up to seven years in prison. He is also charged with obstructing a governmental administration in the second degree, a class A misdemeanor, which, if convicted, amounts to a year-long incarceration, according to the DOI.

Young joined the FDNY in February of 2010, and receives an annual salary of  $50,507. After his arrest, Young was suspended by the FDNY, according to the DOI.
