Man Entering Uber In Bed Stuy Shot By Gunman Cyclist
BEDFORD STUYVESANT — A 26-year-old man was shot to death as he was entering a waiting Uber SUV on Bedford Avenue near Greene Avenue in Bed Stuy last night, bringing the homicides in Brooklyn to 25 for the year so far, up from 9 this time last year.
The victim, who was alone was identified by police as Jorge Vasquez of Halsey Street. Police say he was boarding the Uber while carrying a bouquet of flowers which was still sitting on the seat of the Nissan Rogue with the unidentified driver at the time of the shooting, 11:24 p.m.
Police say the cyclist exchanged words with the victim before shooting him in front of 1047 Bedford Avenue striking him in the chest and neck. The gunman also blew out the rear window of the car before fleeing on his bicycle.
One round was lodged in a vehicle across the street in front of the Pilar Cuban Eatery, where workers said customers and staff were still inside at the time of the shooting. Staff in the restaurant said they did not see how the shooting occurred.
The man was rushed to Brooklyn Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police examined the crime scene into the daylight hours, forcing police to close Bedford Avenue at Greene Avenue, causing a traffic nightmare in and around the incident.
