Man Arrested for Allegedly Providing Gun in Lafayette Gardens Shooting
A 34-year-old man with a criminal record was arrested for providing the gun used in the fatal shooting of a 24-year-old woman in the courtyard of the Lafayette Gardens Houses on Oct. 1, police said.
Cops said Allen Shaw, of 456 DeKalb Avenue, passed the weapon to the alleged 21-year-old gunman, who fired the fatal bullet into the chest of Nicoleia Taylor as she was taking a late-morning walk with her sister’s boyfriend in the courtyard, according to a Kings County District Attorney’s Office spokesman.
The alleged shooter, Corey Brown, approximately 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, was still at large as of Wednesday afternoon, cops said. He also has a criminal record of robbery, menacing and reckless endangerment, according to officials.
A “prior dispute” between two groups, which authorities do not believe was gang-related, possibly triggered the shooting, cops said.
Emergency Medical Services took the mortally wounded Taylor to the Brooklyn Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead, an FDNY spokesman said. Taylor’s sister’s boyfriend was not injured in the gunfire.
Shaw was arrested the same day at 9:10 p.m. for an unrelated attack: allegedly punching a 26-year-old woman in the neck, police said. The next day, police learned of his alleged connection to the Lafayette Gardens shooting, according to authorities. He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, according to the DA’s office.
Shaw has been arrested three times since 1995 and pled guilty to attempted assault in the first degree in 1995, criminal sale of a controlled substance in the third degree in 2000 and criminal possession of marijuana in the third degree in 2007.
A neighbor who declined to provide his name for fear of retaliation told The Nabe last week that Taylor was from East New York and visiting her cousin in Lafayette Gardens when the shooting occurred. Taylor’s family declined to comment on the shooting.
“[Taylor] was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Andre Nash, 51, a neighbor, said last week. “Whatever it was to do with, she wasn’t it. She was the innocent victim. She never did nothing to nobody. She worked. She took care of her son – loving family.”
