Make Music New York in the Nabe
Make Music New York, a city-wide music festival, brings soul singers, indie guitarists, two opera companies, a children’s choir and scads more performers to the nabe today, turning our shops, eateries and public spaces into free concert venues.
The strums, bleeps and beats emanate from noon to midnight at locations ranging from Park Avenue to Fulton Street, Grand Avenue to Staint Edwards Place. While there’s lots of information at MMNY’s website, and printed schedules and maps will be available at various venues during the festival, we’ve compiled a handy list of local performance venues, showtimes and acts that you can use to plan your day of music.
CakeJoy Bakery, 364 Myrtle Avenue
- 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.: Open mic
Green in BKLYN, 432 Myrtle Ave.
- 12 to 1 p.m.: Cosmic Messages
- 1 to 2 p.m.: Sanpo Matsumoto
- 2 to 3 p.m.: The Statue of David
- 3 to 4 p.m.: Barry Kay
- 4 to 5 p.m.: Aisling Peartree
- 6 to 7 p.m.: Daryl Shawn
Fans of obsessive troubadours should note that Shawn’s gig will be his fifth of the day in as many boroughs.
Gnarly Vines / Le Petit Bakery, 350 and 352 Myrtle Avenue
- 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.: Edwin Vazquez
- 5 to 7 p.m.: Sullied Accolades
- 7 to 8 p.m.: Benny Lopez Trio
Like some gypsy-style violin and accordion with your acoustic guitar? Sullied Accolades also throws harmonica into the pot.
Fresh Fanatic, 275 Park Avenue
- 1 to 1:45 p.m.: Griot Blues
- 2 to 2:45 p.m.: Omega Sirius Moon
- 4 to 4:45 p.m.: Pupa Bajah
- 5 to 6 p.m.: Phil Cohen
- 6 to 7 p.m.: Brook Pridemore
Omega Sirius Moon, a solo artist, drops spoken word and chant over fuzz-rock guitar.
Fort Greene Park entrance at Washington Park and Myrtle Avenue
- 12 to 1 p.m.: Ken Camino
- 1 to 3 p.m.: P.S. 20 Band
- 3 to 4 p.m.: Griot Blues
Griot Blues voyages cross-nabe for its second concert of the day.
Brooklyn Public Library, Walt Whitman Branch, 93 Saint Edwards Street
- 1 to 2 p.m.: Jeffrey Paul Bobrick
- 2 to 3 p.m.: MOTP
- 3:30 to 4 p.m.: Helen “Esmeralda” Peterson
Teen rockers MOTP (short for “Members of the Press”) bring back the guitar sounds of ’60s groups like Cream and MC5.
Fork Café, 507 Myrtle Avenue
- 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.: Ken Simon
Simon, who plays sax and flute, has performed in Europe and Asia and taught in New York City public schools.
Cuyler-Gore Park, 795 Fulton Street
- 3 to 4 p.m.: Brother High
- 4 to 5 p.m.: Kelly Saint Patrick & Band
- 5 to 6 p.m.: Soul Understated
- 6 to 7 p.m.: Pillow Theory

Mavis “Swan” Poole sings with casual elegance in Soul Understated.
Hanson Dry, 925 Fulton Street
- 3 to 4 p.m.: Roger Street Friedman
- 7 to 8 p.m.: The Bright Smoke
The title track on The Bright Smoke’s new album, “Late for War,” mixes bluesy acoustic guitar with a haunting, alto vocal.
JACK, 505 1/2 Waverly Avenue
- 3:30 to 4:00 p.m.: Arijit Chakraborty
- 4:30 to 5:00 p.m.: DCRK
Percussive samples simulate the human voice on “Tunnel,” an instrumental track by electronic artists DCRK.
Soco, 509 Myrtle Avenue
- 4 to 8 p.m.: Chocolat Jared
Soco staff tell us that Chocolat Jared covers soul and funk artists like Earth, Wind & Fire.

- 5 to 8 p.m.: Opera on Tap and American Opera Projects

For those twenty-one and over, relax (or keep dancing) after the day’s performances with a vinyl mixologist.
