Luna Park’s March 20 Opening Day Postponed Due To Nor’easter
Say it ain’t so! Luna Park’s opening day has been postponed due to a snowstorm headed for New York City this weekend.
According to weather reports, the storm currently barreling up the East Coast is expected to hit New York on Sunday, March 20 and Monday, March 21 — the first day of spring.
AccuWeather reports:
Following a southward push of arctic air, a storm will move northeastward later this weekend.
It will track close enough to the coast to bring some snow to parts of the mid-Atlantic and a heavy snowfall with increasing wind in southern, central and eastern New England…
The greatest amount of snow will be on non-paved surfaces for this storm.
Whether or not snow falls at a heavy enough rate to cause slippery roads in the Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia and New York City corridors is questionable, since the snow will be wet.
Luna Park’s opening day event will instead take place one week later on Friday, March 25, at 12pm – 6pm, and a special christening ceremony for the newly refurbished Cyclone rollercoaster — which will include a free rides and egg creams for 100 guests — will happen on Saturday, March 26, 11:30am.
“Our mission is to provide the most enjoyable, fun and safe experience for Luna Park’s patrons. With the impending Nor’easter, and the snow it is expected to bring to our area, we did not feel we could fulfill this goal by having our 2016 ceremony this Sunday,” a spokesperson for the amusement park said.
As we reported, this season, Luna Park will also be rolling out its new Platinum Wristband program, a $70 bracelet granting access to four hours of unlimited rides on five of Luna Park’s most exciting rides: The Thunderbolt, Coney Island Cyclone, Zenobio, Slingshot, and Coney Island Raceway. Saturday’s Cyclone ceremony will be attended by the likes of Mr. Met, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Councilman Mark Treyger.
Correction [Saturday, March 19, 10pm]: An earlier version of this article misstated the date and time of Luna Park’s opening day.
