LPC Approves Rooftop Addition To Berkeley Carroll School

The Berkeley Carroll School wants to raise the roof, and they now have approval to do so.

Last week, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a rooftop expansion of the school’s building at 181 Lincoln Place, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, YIMBY reported.

Brandon Clarke of the Berkeley Carroll School believes there is a strong need for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) research space. “The new STEAM lab will get skylights, though that will be in an existing structure,” reports YIMBY. “Some of the new space will be achieved by adding floor area to what is already there.”

The Berkeley Carroll at 181 Lincoln Place was built in 1896. “Several expansions have occurred in the 120 years since, reports YIMBY,  “including the performance space constructed in 1898 and the gymnasium built between 1937 and 1938, plus work in 1956, 1971, 1991-1992, and 2012.”

The new rooftop space will include a new classroom as well as additional space for faculty, a library, and a science area. Architect Gwen Connors of 1100 Architect — a Manhattan and Frankfurt-based firm — designed the project.
