If you’d like to help out a neighborhood organization that does amazing work, from running a food pantry that provides meals to thousands of neighbors every month to handing out hundreds of Thanksgiving turkeys, now is the time.

CAMBA, a local nonprofit headquartered at 1720 Church Avenue, is looking for people to help out with their volunteer-run overnight homeless shelters in faith organizations throughout the borough.

The Respite Bed Program provides “a welcoming, home-like setting where six to 20 guests can enjoy a hot meal and a safe place to sleep,” CAMBA said.

The nonprofit is looking for helping hands with various shifts and tasks, and scheduling is flexible. Tasks include:

Dinner Volunteers

  • Cook, serve and clean up dinner.
  • Ensure that guests are treated with dignity and respect.

Overnight Volunteers

  • Interact with guests and ensure that they have a safe evening, the site is left clean, and all guests are ready to leave at a specific time in the morning.

Volunteers are needed on a one-time or ongoing basis. All volunteers are fully trained and shifts are flexibly scheduled. Orientation trainings are required and offered on a regular basis. Overnight volunteers must be 21 or over.
