Popular Fort Greene bakery A Piece of Velvet is expanding to Coney Island this month, and will be hosting a grand opening on February 14, Valentine’s Day, offering free cake to the first 100 guests.

At the brand new cake shop, located at 1327 Surf Avenue (right next to Rita’s Ices), there will be special heart-shaped treats, music, dancing, raffles, flowers, and more. In attendance to do the ribbon-cutting, will be Councilman Mark Treyger and Comptroller Scott Stringer.

Last month, our sister site Fort Greene Focus sampled one of the bakery’s 20 variations of red velvet cake and raved about its deliciousness:

At $6, slices at A Piece of Velvet aren’t cheap–but they will feed the family. We got a heavy, dense, moist piece of beautifully bright red velvet cake slathered with Oreo frosting (that creamy magic in the middle of the two cookies, plus mini chocolate chips), and were unable to finish it between two people. It might be the ideal solution for the red velvet haters we know, who insist chocolate is the only way to go–turns out, you can enjoy both in one slice! And in a similar revelation, contrary to what the proverb may say, A Slice of Velvet’s hulking slices make it completely feasible to have your cake and eat it too.

Here’s a flier for the event. Hope to see you all there!
