Our local iconic cemetery does not want to bury you young. And they want the world to know it.

Green-Wood Cemetery has launched a powerful social media campaign in order to take a stand against gun violence.

The image displays a newly dug, empty grave with an unmarked tombstone. The text reads “Less business is fine with us. End gun violence NOW.” The ad also currently appears as the header on the cemetery’s website.

The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs invited a number of organizations to participate in the campaign, and Green-Wood joined up with great enthusiasm.

“Death is inevitable. But death at the end of the barrel of a gun is preventable. At Green-Wood, we believe that everyone has the right to live to a ripe old age and die peacefully in their own beds, surrounded by love those they love,” said Green-Wood President Richard J. Moylan.

Doris V. Amen has been funeral director of nearby Jurek – Park Slope Funeral Home since 1989. She regularly works with Green-Wood Cemetery and is a colleague of Moylan.

“When I saw the ad, the first thing I thought of was an anti-drug commercial made by a funeral home in the 1970s. It really made a statement,” said Amen. “I think this ad is well-done, and hopefully it will help with what is happening.”

“Stopping gun violence is a human issue, not a political one,” said Moylan. “Too many people — young and old — lose their lives, horribly and violently.”
