Last Call For Applicants To Join CEC School District 13
Tomorrow (Wednesday, March 11) at 11:59pm is the deadline to apply to join Community Education Council District 13 (CEC 13), aka the local school district’s community-led school board.
(Update: The deadline has been extended to Wednesday, March 18.)
As we mentioned last month, this might be something you’re interested in if you are a parent of a child in public schools in District 13 and want to take a more active role in making sure their needs and the needs of their classmates are represented.
For example, CEC 13 just wrote a resolution in support of public schools’ opposition to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s education plan. Although CECs don’t have legal influence over education decisions, their recommendations are sought by city agencies in an effort to gain community support for projects. CEC members also help inform residents about what’s going on in city schools.
According to Richard Buery, deputy mayor for strategic policy initiatives:
Parents who volunteer on these councils are important advisors and decision-makers who have direct access to their local superintendents and play an important role in education policy.
Even if you don’t want to join the actual board, attending the monthly meetings is a great way to be more involved in having a voice about school and education issues locally and citywide.
