Las Bicicletas Now On Lafayette Avenue

No, not those Citi Bikes on the other side of the street–Gilberto Aceves Navarro’s bike sculpture installation, Las Bicicletas! The five black, white, red, and orange bikes parked on the north side of Lafayette between Fulton and St Felix streets are just a small slice of the 122 works set to be placed in 10 locations across Brooklyn and lower Manhattan this week.

The exhibition, which was first exhibited in 2008 in Mexico City, is intended to encourage art lovers to visit all of its locations by bicycle and consider alternatives to automobile use. Check out the full Las Bicicletas map here–several of the other installations are in Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights just a short ride away, and would make for a great evening ride some lovely day this week. If the next few days don’t work for you, though, don’t sweat it–Las Bicicletas will be around until September.
