Landmarks Preservation Commission Rejects Weir Greenhouse Plan
Yesterday, we reported that Green-Wood Cemetery wants to restore the Weir Greenhouse and turn it into a new visitors’ center and office building. However, the plans had to be approved the Landmarks Preservation Commission, which reviewed the plans yesterday and rejected the Cemetery’s proposal.
According to YIMBY, the commissioners were ready to approve the restoration and demolition, but not the new building or the connections to it.
The LPC has a say regarding the new building because the structure would be in the landmark designated lot, which the LPC has jurisdiction over.
LPC Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan said called the greenhouse a “great building” and was very excited by the prospect of restoration, but questioned the design of the new building. Commissioner Frederick Bland said it crowded the greenhouse.
So, Green-Wood Cemetery and their architect, Page Ayres Cowley, will need to re-work the proposal and come back to the LPC.
