La Nueva Union #2

About a year ago, a new Mexican deli opened on Newkirk Avenue between East 16th and East 17th Streets, but recently Rancho Alegre seems to have vanished. A new Mexican deli has taken its place, though, and has been open for about a month. Meet La Nueva Union 2.

They tell me it’s under new ownership, and that it’s no relation to La Nueva Union on Cortelyou.

They’ve got regular bogeda fair, like egg sandwiches, and they’ve got a a menu of tortas and tacos to go (at $2, those are some of the cheaper tacos in the neighborhood). One of the best draws of Rancho Alegre was their tamales–La Nueva Union 2 will also serve them, but only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

I tried a torta and it left a bit to be desired, but I’m looking forward to trying out a taco, and I’m hoping the tamales are awesome–and if they are, and you guys go and demand them enough, maybe they will make them available all week.
