Another great addition to the nightlife on Church Avenue has just opened its doors. La Loba Cantina, a bar featuring the cuisine of Oaxaca, Mexico had a “soft launch” last night.

The creation of Kensington residents Jeff James and Meredith Sheehy, La Loba Cantina is located at 709 Church Avenue, between East 7th Street and 8th Street.

La Loba Cantina features Oaxacan fare that “the women of Oaxaca make right on the streets,” James said.

A handmade tortilla press — just like what you would find in Oaxaca — is “the heart of the kitchen,” he added.

This is the first food venture of the husband-and-wife team, who live a block from their new store front, a former Xpress Pizza. They recently ran a Kickstarter campaign to help raise funds for the new restaurant.

We’re especially excited to check out La Loba’s expansive collection of mezcal and tequila — there are over 30 types of mezcal alone. La Loba is serving tasting flights for those interested in getting a sense of the range of the bar’s collection. They also offer an interesting assortment of rum-based drinks and other cocktails.

Will Kensington become a center for sampling the incredible diversity of Mexico’s cuisine? We’re excited to see what happens next.

La Loba Cantina is located at 709 Church Avenue, between East 7th and 8th Street, and is open Monday through Thursday from 4pm to 1am, Fridays from 4pm to 2am, Saturdays from 2pm to 2am, and Sundays from 2pm to 1am.
