Kensington’s shelter for homeless families is asking its neighbors for assistance.

The Kensington Family Shelter on McDonald Avenue, which is now nearly full, is requesting donations of specific items for babies, said Catherine Barufaldi and Tracy Connor, local residents who are coordinating volunteer support for the center.

The shelter received many essential items during the last round of donation days, said Barufaldi and Connor in an email. At the moment, the shelter

does not

need any more clothing, toys, books or housewares. However, they are in need of the following items:

  • Baby wIpes — these can be dropped off at the shelter any day between 8am and 5pm or ordered and shipped directly to the shelter through this Amazon wish list.
  • Diapers (size 4,5,6) — these can be dropped off at the shelter any day between 8am and 5pm or ordered and shipped directly to the shelter through this Amazon wish list.
  • Walkers for babies — if you have one to donate, please sign up here and drop it off. If there are no signup slots available, that means the shelter has received all it needs.
  • Toilet-top potties — if you have one in pristine condition to donate, please sign up here and drop it off. If there are no signup slots available, that means the shelter has received all it needs. You can also gift one through this Amazon wish list.
  • Strollers (single or double) — if you have one to donate, please sign up here and drop it off. If there are no signup slots available, that means the shelter has received all it needs.

On February 14th, more than 50 shelter residents attended a “spirit-lifting” Valentine’s Day dinner party that was prepared and organized by neighborhood residents. There was also dancing, and holiday arts and crafts for the children living at the shelter.

Barufaldi and Connor thanked all of the residents who made the evening possible, along with the staff and students at P.S. 130’s afterschool program who created the decorations.

“Once again, thank you so much for your generosity and for showing what a great community this is. CAMBA and the staff at the shelter have asked us to pass along their thanks, as well,” they wrote.
