Keep Your Tree’s Mulch Local With The Fourth Avenue Holiday Tree Drag
Want to make sure your Christmas tree becomes mulch, but don’t want to drag it to one of the MulchFest locations? If you live close to 4th Avenue, you’ve got a great alternative coming up this weekend.
On Sunday, January 11 from 9-10:30am, GreenSpace on Fourth, the Park Slope Civic Council‘s Forth on Fourth Avenue committee, and the Boerum Hill Association are teaming up with the Gowanus Canal Conservancy for the Fourth Avenue Holiday Tree Drag.
Haul your tree out to a corner of 4th Avenue — they’ll collect mainly from 12th, 8th, Union, Sackett, Degraw, Butler, Baltic, St Marks, and Pacific — preferably near a hydrant, so it’s easier for the vehicles from the Gowanus Canal Conservancy and their pro bono arborists to stop and pick them up, which they’ll start at 10:30am. They’ll bring the trees to the GCC Salt Lot for chipping for mulch.
And if you happen to spot some trees already out on 4th, drag them to the corner if you can! GCC has a goal of turning 500 trees into mulch this weekend, and with your help, we think they can do it.
While you could just leave your tree out for the city to pick up and turn into mulch, participating in this particular event ensures that the mulch gets put to use in our community — GCC has generously provided mulch and compost for trees along 4th Avenue in the past.
Anyone who volunteers is invited to the Salt Lot, located at 2nd Avenue and 5th Street, on Sunday between 11am-3pm to see the chipping process and enjoy some light refreshments.
