Joe’s Pizza On 7th Avenue Reopens As Numero 28 Pizza
When Joe’s Pizza “temporarily closed” back in February, neighbors weren’t quite sure what was to come next for the space at 173 7th Avenue, between Carroll and Garfield. Well, here it is: The pizzeria reopened on Monday as Numero 28 Pizza, the latest location for a small Manhattan pizza chain, making its first foray into Brooklyn.
We hear that the owner joined up with his brothers, who are behind Numero 28, for this new location, and it’s definitely different from what Joe’s was. They’ve got a brick oven and they’re serving up both round and long, rectangular Neapolitan pies, including a 29-inch version ($27-$37) that will serve 3-4 people and you can be split into the three types of pizza of your choosing (so, one pie can be 1/3 margherita, 1/3 tartufo, and 1/3 diavola, for instance — see the menu below).
We tried a slice with pepperoni — they were still figuring out the portion sizes, or this might have been a pizza cut up for samples accidentally, which is how we have two smaller pieces there — and it was a good slice of pizza, though we usually prefer our crust a bit more charred out of a brick oven. At $4 per slice, it’s a bit pricy, but we’d go back to try some more, perhaps a whole pie split among friends.
They’ve also got fresh handmade pastas with a variety of sauces, like butter and sage ($7-$9); prosciutto cotto, peas, and heavy cream ($10-$12); and a quattro formaggi with gorgonzola, Parmigiano, brie, and gruyere ($11-$13). Plus there are salads, panini, a few entrees, and the cakes on display looked pretty tasty.
Plus, for those of you who liked Joe’s pies, they say they will still be making those, and you’ll be able to grab an American slice for $2.50.
They say they are working on a liquor license, and should soon be serving beer and wine, as well.
To make room for the oven and the new counter area in the front, there’s only seating in the back now, and the renovations definitely make it an inviting place to bring the family for a bite to eat.
So, did you happen to grab a sample out on 7th Ave yesterday, and if so, what did you think?
