Introducing The Open Corner: March #1

Art, in whatever form it takes, is an undeniably important part of our lives in Ditmas Park. Whether as creators or supporters of it, we are a community that values artistic expression. In an effort to reflect that in the Ditmas Park Corner, today we’re introducing our art series, The Open Corner.

The series takes its name from an architectural device utilized by Frank Llyod Wright–the corner window, a frameless corner formed by joining two sections of glass together.

Not only does it evoke architecture, the most visible form of artistic expression in our neighborhood, but also limitless possibility and an open space just waiting to be filled. The next question would be “how to fill it?”

Each month, we will give one artist one slot on the blog once a week for the entire month. They can use the space however they like provided that what they do reflects Ditmas Park in some way. Since we’re starting mid-month, our first series–appearing on Fridays in March–will be three weeks instead of four. And The Open Corner’s initial artist is….

About the piece

Simply my take on the new blog’s logo. My #1 favorite thing about this neighborhood would be the Victorian houses. When I first came to the States (to Buffalo, NY), I was blown away by the beauty and individuality of the old houses I found lining the leafy streets in the area in which I was staying. I would wander for hours, taking photographs of them. Coming from small-town England, these houses seemed HUGE, and so much more interesting and full of character than the late 20th century brick structures that I grew up with. Now I find myself living in Ditmas Park, which is happily very similar to that Buffalo neighborhood, and my only gripe is that I don’t actually live in one of these beauties!
