Installations Depicting Kids In Cages Pop Up Across City

Two dozen disturbing art installations popped up across NYC early Wednesday morning depicting migrant children detained in cages.

RAICES, a non-profit organization that assists families seeking asylum in the United States, created the #NoKidsInCages installations to protest the thousands of children who have been separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border and forced to “live in cages.” Six children have died in these detention facilities.

New Yorkers posted photos on social media of child-sized mannequins wrapped in silver foil blankets lying on the ground surrounded by a chainlink fence. The installations included audio of children crying.

The works were installed outside media offices (The New York Times, Fox News), cultural institutions (The Whitney Museum), and at areas with heavy pedestrian traffic (Union Square, Broadway & Houston).

Here in Brooklyn, installations were placed by the Brooklyn Bridge in DUMBO; the York Street “F” subway station in DUMBO; the Park Slope YMCA; Atlantic/Barclays Center; McCarren Park; the Bedford “L” subway station in Williamsburg; and outside Vice’s office in Williamsburg.

The installation at Atlantic/Barclays Center had already been removed when Bklyner stopped by just after 10am this morning. Police have been covering or dismantling the works according to Gothamist who has a list of all the sites across the city.

“#NoKidsInCages is about the children. We cannot be a nation that separates families,” the project website reads. Learn more at nokidsincages.com.
