It looks like we’re well on our way to getting that traffic light at Newkirk Avenue and Westminster Road!

Many thanks to neighbor Wayde Cunningham for sending us this photo that he snapped earlier today of the work that’s being done to the intersection by PS 217 and Milk and Honey. The installation of this light comes after numerous neighbors voiced concerns about the intersection, which has long been plagued by accidents (including a recent one that resulted in a parked car and a home’s wall being smashed).

The DOT told us earlier this month that there were six reported crashes within a 12-month period at that location. The light is expected to be completely installed by the end of February.

When we first posted about this, a number of you noted that there are other intersections in our area that also need attention from the DOT, with one neighbor suggesting a stop sign or crosswalk at Newkirk and Marlborough and another saying saying “the entire Newkirk corridor between Coney Island Avenue and Ocean Avenue should be improved.” There was also a suggestion to install a light at Newkirk and E. 17th as well.

Where would you like to see a traffic light (or some other traffic-calming measure, such as a stop sign) in our neighborhood?
