Mayor Bill de Blasio was in the house — Humo Smokehouse, that is — this past Friday, December 4, for a taste of what he had been told were “the best ribs in the neighborhood.”

It was shortly after 9pm when one of de Blasio’s bodyguards entered the restaurant at 336 Myrtle Avenue to tell owners David Oliva and Ruben Caballero that the mayor would arrive in 20 minutes. “We thought he was joking, but 20 minutes later, he showed up with his wife,” chuckled Oliva. “It was a big surprise.”

De Blasio and wife Chirlane McCray shared a platter of ribs, a side of collards, and sausages, and “finished everything,” Oliva said. Then, they took photos with the staff and a surprised customer who had walked in to pick up a dinner order.

The mayor isn’t Humo’s first celebrity visit, as they have welcomed “a few actors and people from the Food Network,” but he is perhaps the most recognizable one. Oliva said he is welcome back any time, and that us local fans of their delicious food should also note that a few new dishes have been added to the menu for our next visit, too: Mac and Cheese, and Beef Chili.

See you there!
