How Much Do We Complain About Dog Poop?
Quite a bit, but not as much as some other NYC neighborhoods. After seeing the cool WNYC dog map, Gothamist created a map that breaks down complaints lodged with 311 about dogs, and here’s how many were made in our area, by zip code:
Incident Zip: 11226
Canine Noise Complaints: 103
Canine Waste Complaints: 105
Total Dog Complaints: 208
Incident Zip: 11218
Canine Noise Complaints: 144
Canine Waste Complaints: 66
Total Dog Complaints: 210
Incident Zip: 11230
Canine Noise Complaints: 165
Canine Waste Complaints: 94
Total Dog Complaints: 259
Of course, that doesn’t account for all the complaints that aren’t reported to 311 – I certainly didn’t call last week when I stepped in a pile of dog poop somewhere between Beverley and Cortelyou, but we could add that to the 11218 list. Looks like our area has more complaints about dog noise, with 412 complaints total in those three zip codes.
It’s a little surprising people even called to complain about some incidents of dog waste. Have you ever called 311 about that, or does it seem futile? In the past, neighbors have tried to encourage dog owners to clean up by leaving bags in areas heavily trafficked by dogs. If that doesn’t work, what else can we do but hope Sanitation actually hands out tickets?
