Hit-And-Run Leaves Car Smashed On Albemarle Road [Video]
Early this morning, a garbage truck smashed into parked cars on Albemarle Road in Kensington before driving away, surveillance footage shows.
Initial police reports accounted for one of the damaged cars in front of 114 Albemarle Road between McDonald Avenue and East 2nd Street. The dark blue SUV was totaled, according to the building’s super. The second damaged car belonged to the super, who was left with a destroyed fender.
Surveillance footage from 114 Albemarle Road shows the three-car crash just before 4am on November 21. The unlisted sanitation truck appears hit two cars from behind, sending one reeling onto the sidewalk.
Additional video shows the truck back up, pause for a moment, then drive away. In this second video, you can see the pile-up from behind before the truck drives away.
The truck careened over the speedbump on Albemarle Road, said the super. He cited the need for additional stop signs at the corner to keep traffic at bay.
A construction professional in the building told us that the sanitation truck belonged to a private company — not the DOS, as some neighbors speculated. A representative from the private company showed up later in the morning and spoke to another affected building resident, who wished to remain anonymous.
As we pored over the surveillance footage, the super told us that he’s had to replace the building’s cameras on multiple occasions because thieves break them before stealing from the building. Just this past October, he said, the entire basement was robbed of power tools and equipment in the middle of the night.
“There is something very special about that strip of Albemarle that makes people do very stupid driving maneuvers,” said one neighbor on a community Facebook page. “Just this past summer, I witnessed someone take out three cars while trying to pull a u-turn. Broad daylight, no less.”
