As we wander about our modern neighborhood, caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s easy to ignore the long and vibrant history of our community. Let’s remedy that. Every weekend, we’ll take a step back, with the help of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle archives, and explore what was happening around South Slope over a century ago.

Living in NYC, it’s understandable that the extreme fashion choices of neighbors are oftentimes met with nary a glance. We must say, though, that the Lizard Fad mentioned in this February 2, 1894 issue definitely has the potential to turn some heads.

One year later, on February 2, 1895, we find an accident on 18th Street and 7th Ave, that really ticked some local chickens.
