Historic Church Burns in Sheepshead Bay [VIDEO]
SHEEPSHEAD BAY – The Emmanuel Episcopal Church church burned down last night in Sheepshead Bay, the FDNY confirmed, after the historic church caught fire for the second time in 11 years.
The fire broke out after midnight, with firefighters responding to the scene by 12:30 am on Thursday, November 29, officials said.
The three-alarm fire was extinguished brought under control just after 2:15 am, said the FDNY, with 140 firefighters and 33 units responding to the blaze. Luckily, no one was injured in the conflagration.
The Department of Buildings has already placed a vacate order on the burned property, noting that 80% of the roof was burned, and though the trusses remained, they had been structurally compromised.
The church’s steeple was partially burned in the fire but remained standing.
Emmanuel Episcopal, located at 2635 East 23rd Street, near Jerome Avenue, was built in 1927, though the congregation was organized earlier, in 1895.
According to the church’s website, Emmanuel Episcopal was the first racially integrated church in Brooklyn.
At the time of last night’s fire, repairs from the 2007 fire had nearly been completed.
