It almost seemed like it wasn’t going to happen, but new Kensington watering hole Hinterlands had its official opening last night.

Hinterlands, located on Church Avenue between East 7th and 8th Streets, is yet another addition to the changing block that has also welcomed a new wine store and upscale Mexican bar and restaurant in the last six months. But unlike the other new arrivals, Hinterlands promises to stay open until 4am.

Hinterlands was packed with happy drinkers last night, who spilled into a back room and outdoor patio. The patio closed at midnight, but conversations were still lively in the dimly-lit back room until at least 1am. The bar, which has a healthy array of draught beers, wine and hard alcohol on offer, also had a soft launch on Sunday.

Local businesses have been very supportive, said co-owner Stuart Wellington. “We’re happy to be joining this community, and a special thank you to Medwin Pang & Hunger Pang for providing some great small plates for the party,” he said.

Co-owner Sharlene Frank, who gained local fame after she re-opened the much loved Mooney’s on Flatbush Avenue and named it Sharlene’s in 2009, told the crowd how happy she was to be in Kensington. It was a long wait, Frank said, but well worth it.
