State Assemblymember Dov Hikind sent Governor Andrew Cuomo a letter earlier this week asking him to stop his planned traffic changes for Ocean Parkway and to come observe the busy Brooklyn road himself and discuss ways to make it safer.

Hikind hosted a protest on Ocean Parkway and Avenue J last week to speak out against the state-proposed changes that would prohibit drivers from making right turns off of Ocean Parkway onto Avenue C, Avenue J, Avenue P, and Kings Highway.

It would direct traffic into the service roads, which could clog the small thruways and possibly block emergency vehicles from getting through, according to protestors from Sunday.

“In addition to the elimination of these right turns, the NYS Department of Transportation’s plan will eliminate left turns from the service road at nine different locations,” Hikind wrote to Cuomo. “Motorists who wish to cross over Ocean Parkway or travel on the mainline will now be forced to remain in the service road for many blocks all within the span of a mile,”

The changes are set to go into effect in February 2017.
