Highly Anticipated Sir D’s Lounge Opens Today
The wait is over for a business that many neighbors have kept their eye on for quite some time.
Sir D’s Lounge (837 Union Street, near 7th Avenue) put up its sandwich board outside to welcome us in. The spacious, comfy, eclectic sofas and tables were already filling up.
The new cafe and music spot (which they’ll be hosting soon) takes the place of Tea Lounge. Until closing in December 2014, the former cafe had become — as we wrote upon learning the news — “the busiest spot in Park Slope for strollers, freelancers, and anyone looking for a cozy place to start out drinking coffee and end up with a glass of wine.” The cafe had been open for almost 14 years.
So hours after it opened, does Sir D’s feel super different from Tea Lounge? Not really. But with events to be planned and music to be scheduled, it’s still too early to make a major comparison. And the menu is expansive.
The owners are currently waiting on a liquor license application, so alcoholic beverages are currently not being served. That said, coffees, teas, pastries, a variety of breakfast items, paninis, and salads are ready to go.
Of course, lunch needed to be had. And the Sir D’s Delight — turkey, jack cheese, and jalapeños — was nice and spicy with a fluffy panini (thicker then what you’re used to — in a good way).
The staff is a very friendly group, and co-owner Chris Dixon came out to welcome us.
‘I’m super thrilled it’s open. This is a hub, man,” said neighbor Tina Richerson, a regular from the Tea Lounge days. “It looks cleaner. Ok, I don’t like the green paint on the walls — it’s gross. But the menu looks awesome,” she said.
Richerson is also a saxophonist who played live music at Tea Lounge. She looks forward to having her jazz band, The Tina Richerson Quartet, give the space a go. “I’m excited to have the music back. I’m excited to have my band back here.”
So was it coincidence that Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Our House” was playing when we sat down? Come on in and decide for yourself.
Sir D’s Lounge is located at 837 Union Street, near 7th Avenue. Current hours (which will adjust soon) are 7am-9pm. WiFi is currently available however will be limited during live music events.
