Here Comes The Snow: Parking Rules, Plows, And How To Stay Warm
It might not look like much out there right now, but we’ve got a pretty intense winter storm on the way. In addition to 4-8 inches of snow accumulation, wind chills are going to range from 0 to -5 degrees from Thursday evening into Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
In order to prepare for the oncoming storm, the city has suspended alternate side parking for Thursday, January 2. Meters are still in effect. No word yet on Friday, but we’ll be sure to update the site with any new information that becomes available.
The New York City Office of Emergency Management offers these tips for pedestrians if you’re out during or after the storm:
• Exercise caution and avoid slippery surfaces; some ice may not be visible.
• Wear layers including a hat, gloves and scarf to stay protected from the cold. And, keep clothes and shoes dry.
• Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered if you go outside.
• Have heightened awareness of cars, particularly when approaching or crossing intersections.
With the extreme cold, it’s also important to take precautions against hypothermia and frostbite:
• Wear a hat, hood, or scarf.
• Wear layers, as they provide better insulation and warmth.
• Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered if you go outside.
• Keep clothing dry; if a layer becomes wet, remove it.
Be sure to check in on any family members or neighbors that might need a little extra help before and after the storm, and don’t forget about the city’s snow removal rules once everything calms down out there (nobody wants to start 2014 with a fine).
