Help Keep Prospect Park Safe as an NYPD Auxiliary Officer

Following reports of an increase in crime in Prospect Park last year — 40 crimes, compared to 27 in 2011 — the NYPD is recruiting new Auxiliary Police to volunteer to help patrol the park:

Auxiliary Police provide extra “eyes and ears” for the Police Department by performing uniformed foot and vehicle patrols. They are trained to observe and report conditions requiring the services of the regular police. Whenever possible, they assist in non-enforcement and non-hazardous duties.

Among some other qualifications, you have to be 17 years or older to enroll, and there is an 18-week training program that meets Tuesday evenings. Once training is complete, there’s a 12-hours-per-month minimum commitment.

You can apply online or by calling 212-AUX-1000. Please note that Prospect Park is in the 78th Precinct, so you should request that as your desired command.
