Heat and Power Out Last Week for Locals on Clermont Avenue
Despite freezing temperatures, some locals went without power and heat for three days last week, an outage likely caused by melting road salt corroding underground equipment, according to a spokesperson from ConEdison.
Between the morning of Feb. 5 and early on Feb. 8, 17 ConEdison customers residents on Clermont Avenue and Myrtle Avenue, between Willoughby Avenue and Adelphi Street, had partial power and no heat. Katie Friedman, who lives on Clermont Avenue between Willoughby Avenue and Myrtle Avenue, said on Friday that the temperature in her apartment the night before was 56 degrees.
Friedman told The Nabe that her building was one affected by the utility problems. “We have filed multiple reports of our outage online,” she said on Friday. “The time that they estimate it will be fixed by keeps getting delayed.”
ConEdison attempted to fix the power on Thursday, but workers could not park on the street due to an illegally parked car, according to Friedman.
“Which is ridiculous, it’s New York City, there’s always an illegally parked car,” said Ingrid Peck, who lives in Friedman’s building with her husband and her two-and-a-half year old son. Some of the outlets in their ground floor apartment still worked, she said, so they relied on two space heaters and layers of clothing to keep warm.
“It’s a drafty apartment at the best of times,” Peck said.
ConEdison said told Friendman the power would be restored by 11 p.m. Friday night. The power came back on at 2:30 a.m. on Saturday.
“I’m just glad I wasn’t home with a newborn,” Peck said. “It was not a fun experience by any means.”
