If you think you hear “The Imperial March” playing as you’re walking around the area, there’s no reason to worry that Darth Vader bought a brownstone and is about to start asking Captain Picard for pizza advice. Apparently, it’s just the police playing the Star Wars villain’s theme song, according to a story in New York magazine.
They report that the bassist for the band Clap Yours Hands Say Yeah heard a cruiser pumping the music as he was jogging at night in Prospect Park, while another man heard it coming from a police car on 5th Ave near 12th Street back in March. We can only wonder why, as does the magazine:
It’s not clear whether the incidents are the work of a single pair of cops or if the practice is more widespread. We reached out to the NYPD for comment and never heard back.
