Happy Hanukkah, Ditmas Park!

We wanted to take a moment to say Happy Hanukkah to all of our neighbors celebrating this week! We hope you get to enjoy time with your family during these eight days – as well as eat as many fried treats as you can. (And, speaking of delicious fried treats, check out Temple Beth Emeth’s Rabbi Heidi Hoover’s favorite latke recipes here.)

If you’re looking to stay in the neighborhood to celebrate the Festival of Lights, which begins at sundown tonight, Temple Beth Emeth (83 Marlborough Road) will hold a Hanukkah family service at 6:30pm on Friday, December 19.

Rabbi Hoover wrote:

Everyone is invited to bring a Hanukkah menorah and five candles, which we will light together at the beginning of the service. Hanukkah songs–old favorites as well as newer pieces–are integrated into our family-friendly Shabbat services. After the service, we’ll share latkes and jelly doughnuts at our annual latke party. Bring some latkes to share, and try latkes that others have made!

A little outside the neighborhood, Chabad of Park Slop will kick off its annual Hanukkah celebration at Grand Army Plaza tonight at sundown by lighting the world’s largest menorah.

And at the East Midwood Jewish Center (1625 Ocean Avenue), there will be a “Lights in the Darkness” program for those mourning the loss of someone to explore ways to allow for grief, while seeking meaning and comfort through the themes of Hanukkah. The program will be held Sunday December 21 from 4-5:30pm. It is free and open to all, and there will be light refreshments. An RSVP is appreciated, which you can do by emailing Shira at sfelberbaum@jbfcs.org or calling 212-632-4735.

Chag sameach, Ditmas Park!
