Hair And Co Brooklyn, A Multicultural-Focused Salon, Opens At 487 Myrtle Avenue
Welcome to the neighborhood, Hair & Co Brooklyn! Located at 487 Myrtle Avenue (between Hall and Ryerson), the new hair salon celebrated their grand opening earlier this month and officially debuted their new signage this morning.
Described as a “truly multicultural” salon with a collaborative approach to styling and customer service, the space is owned by well-known hairstylist Shannon King and his wife, Allyson King, who have a combined 60-plus years of styling and administrative/leadership experience between them.
“We’ve talked about it on and off for 20 years and finally decided to do something on our own,” Allyson told us, explaining that they came to Clinton Hill and Myrtle Avenue “for a number of different reasons.
“We were looking for high growth potential, still in lower rent zone, but with potential for future growth. With all the development happening on Myrtle, we thought it was a great opportunity,” she explained.
The duo also found a neighborhood that is as diverse and vibrant as their clientele. “Our concept is a little different; as a biracial family, we’re focusing on everything and we have a team who can do everything,” both for adults and kids.
“What makes us different is we have a team that can tackle the diversity of community. We work in a collaborative environment, and have a hair color barista to ensure that every color that leaves looks fantastic,” she said. “And we don’t work in silos, we work together as a team. We talk to each other and look at each others’ approach — which comes from my husband’s experience working in model rooms.”
Customer service is also different, she noted, “The typical salon is owned by hairdresser, which we are, but we also provide. . . a different level of panache and polish that you may not see at the typical salon.”
Prices range from $20 for brow work and $75 for a cut and style on up, depending on the service.
According to the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, the salon also participated in their Storefront Improvement grant program, which provides small matching grants to businesses who make investments in their storefronts.
