Greenpoint Cyclist Hit During Century Bike Tour Dies

KENSINGTON – The NYPD announced on Friday that the 55-year-old, Greenpoint cyclist run down by a drunken, unlicensed driver during last month’s Century Bike Tour has died.

Nancy Pease and two other cyclists were struck by 39-year-old Kensington resident Abel Antonio Pina-Morocho at approximately 9am on Sunday, September 10.

The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad said that Pina-Morocho drove his 2005 Dodge Caravan into a group of cyclists, who were stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of 12th Avenue and 39th Street, while pulling out of a parking space.

The driver was arrested at the scene. His blood alcohol level was reportedly .266—three times over the legal limit, the New York Daily News reports. The two other victims did not suffer serious injuries.

When police arrived at the scene, they found Pease unconscious, pinned beneath the Pina-Morocho ‘s vehicle. She was transported to Maimonides Medical Center with injuries to her head, lacerations to her liver, and intra-abdominal bleeding, according to the Daily News.  She fell into a coma and died from her injuries on September 22.

Pina-Morocho is being held on $250,000 bail on charges of vehicular assault, driving without a license, and drunk driving. Charges against him are expected to be upgraded since Pease has died, the Daily News says.
